Crafter

Crafter is a long-running Korean guitar maker whose roots go back to SungEum Guitars in 1972. The brand is best known internationally for acoustics, but the current catalog is much broader: compact MINO models, stage acoustics, classicals and ukuleles sit alongside a renewed Modern Seoul electric-guitar program.

Crafter is not merely an “import acoustic” label. It is a multigeneration Korean guitar company with its own product history, engineering vocabulary and current series structure.

IDENTIFY YOUR GUITAR

Which Crafter do you have?

Read the full model code and inspect the headstock era. Crafter’s catalog has evolved across decades, and current series names are only part of the used-market story.

  1. Older SungEum / Crafter connection: early instruments may predate the modern branding system.
  2. Acoustic series first: MINO, MIND, Stage, Silver, ES and other names place the guitar more accurately than “Crafter acoustic.”
  3. Check top construction. Current MINO examples can use solid tops with layered backs and sides—do not call them all-solid without evidence.
  4. Current electrics: Modern Seoul, Charlotte, Crema and related lines make “Crafter = acoustic only” outdated.

USED VALUE GUIDE

Start with the exact model

Used Crafter values vary significantly by era, series and country. The strongest starting point is construction: solid top versus all-solid, electronics package, body shape and exact model.

COMMON ACOUSTICSUsually modest-to-mid used market
HIGHER / ALL-SOLIDHigher model-specific values
MODERN SEOUL ELECTRICSCurrent line · limited used history
  1. Search the model number exactly.
  2. Check the top/back/sides specification instead of assuming construction from appearance.
  3. Test DS-2 Pro+/other electronics and built-in tuner functions when equipped.
  4. For older models, compare period catalogs or archived dealer listings rather than only current names.

CURRENT USED MARKET

See what the market is doing now

Crafter is common enough internationally that model-specific searches usually work better than broad brand searches.

COMPARE

What else lives in this neighborhood?

Crafter acoustics can overlap Takamine, Tanglewood, Alvarez, Cort, Faith and Yamaha depending on series. Current electrics should be compared by hardware, pickup configuration and construction rather than the acoustic reputation of the brand.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Before you buy—or price—one

  1. Do not convert “Korean brand” into a blanket country-of-origin claim for every model/era without checking the label.
  2. Solid top does not mean all-solid.
  3. The current electric catalog is newer territory and may have thinner used-market data.
  4. Older SungEum/Crafter history can complicate identification of early instruments.

HISTORY & COMMENTARY

From four craftsmen in a Seoul basement to a multigeneration guitar company

Crafter says its predecessor, SungEum Guitars, was founded in April 1972 by Park Hyun-Kwon with four craftsmen in a Seoul basement. The business expanded to Yangju in 1978. The Crafter name emerged under second-generation leadership in the late 1980s, and third-generation leadership now continues as Crafter Korea. The company’s own timeline includes a specialized high-end factory opened in 2019 and a renewed electric-guitar project beginning in the 2020s.

WHAT PLAYERS LIKE

Why this brand earns a closer look

Crafter often rewards the buyer who looks past simple brand familiarity. The company has enough history and series depth that two instruments with the same logo can differ substantially in construction and market position.
